Elton John might be an idiot

Daring Fireball said it best. It looks like he really said this:

"I do think it would be an incredible experiment to shut down the whole internet for five years and see what sort of art is produced over that span"

But why is that? What really strikes me is not what he said that, but that he apparently isn't saying it because he doesn't like to have his songs pirated, as any other dumb artist should, but because the internet had compelled people to "sit at home and make their own records, which is sometimes OK but it doesn't bode well for long-term artistic vision".
I guess Elton would prefer decide who's hot and who's not instead of having people making their own choices. Soooo sad...
